Description

>>>>>> PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DESCRIPTIONS HAVE BEEN REVISED!<<<<<<<

Apostasy is when a believer in a religion renounces that religion in word or deed (at the very least). This would include becoming an atheist or converting to a different religion.

In many nations  and especially within closely knit communities around the world today, people who are found guilty of apostasy, or who are believed to perhaps be guilty,  are punished with death. Most often, the "apostate's" relatives exact justice for this perceived "crime", despite it being completely against the law in their area to do so.

Yeah, really.

I think this is wrong. It denies a person the freedom of religion that Americans like me can take for granted. It's very intolerant of differences. People CANNOT be the same in all things! Everyone is different! That's normal and right! My parents might not like my spoken doubts about our shared religion, but they have never threatened me with harm or death for it. (My self-righteous older brother did smack my face with an empty shoe box when I started questioning everything openly at age 14).

In America, it would be rather unusual for parents, siblings, or uncles to threaten or do physical harm to a person for having doubts or for converting. Although, I have heard of it several times here, too. Fundamentalists can be dangerous to the ones they are supposed to love most. Nobody is completely safe from this attitude anywhere.

It seems cruel and barbaric to KILL A PERSON (especially if that person is a relative of yours!)  just because they have denied the religion of his/her parents, neighbors, and/or government/clerical body. It's important to note that many ordinary people all over the world today BELIEVE that apostates SHOULD be executed, even if it is not the law of her/his particular nation.

Like HONOR KILLINGS, it is very often ILLEGAL TO KILL  PEOPLE ( whether it is a family member or not) JUST BECAUSE THEY NO LONGER BELIEVE; HOWEVER,  A VAST MAJORITY OF AVERAGE PEOPLE (when polled) THINK AND ACT DIFFERENTLY. Often, these two "sins against God" are intertwined. For instance a college-age student starts speaking out about how the scriptures could  all be ripe bullshit. Hearing about it and feeling totally mortified, another family member will take it upon themselves to RESTORE THE FAMILY HONOR BY KILLING the blasphemer.

Traditions should be ditched if they no longer make sense or seem unfair. Don't hold onto something just because "that's how it has always been". People have to hide it if they begin to doubt the faith into which they were born. That is not fair at all.

Very few people in the world right now are "lucky" enough to choose freely the religion they practice. Most people, including  most Americans, are stuck with believing in and practicing the rites of whatever religion their family just happens to be. It's all a roll of the dice. Pure chance. Who gets to pick the family into which they are born or adopted? Nobody, I think.

Denounce the death penalty for individuals guilty of apostasy. Speak out against this antiquated PRACTICE & IDEA, before it's too late for someone you know and love. Apostasy should never mean execution!

^^^^^^^ EDITED AND REVISED COMMENTS! PLEASE NOTE!^^^^^^^^

I'll be posting another stamp soon to condemn all honor killing.
It's important to point out clearly that many different faiths have a serious problem with apostasy. Honor killing for a "crime against God"is also found around the world, including the West.

The writing is a little too small, but this is a great message you've given here. I can't believe this is still allowed to happen in the 21st century. It's an enormous violation of human rights. If I were from Saudi Arabia, I would probably just defy the establishment and apostize no matter what the penalty was. My very last words would be "Al-Hubalu akbar!" :D
